Editor Note: Over the next year, the Spy will be checking in with a number of leaders in the nonprofit community on how their organizations are faring, and the challenges they face to deliver on their mission. We are naming this series Spy Reconnaissance.
If there was ever a time when the phrase “sitting on the hot seat” could be applied to those running our country’s community hospitals, it would be now. With the thousands of adjustments needed to implement the Affordable Healthcare Act, the demand for financial accountability, regionalization, planning of a new hospital, and let’s not forget things like preparing for a Ebola patient, this is certainly the case with Ken Kozel in his role of chief executive officer of University of Maryland’s Shore Regional Health.
In his interview with the Spy, Kozel talks about these complex subjects, starting with Ebola and the impact of Obamacare in Maryland. Ken also outlines the strategic planning needed for a new health center in Easton and Shore Health’s desire to expand programs and services to provide real value to patients while offering better services where they live to avoid costly and unnecessary trips to emergency room.
