The Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary’s Nursing Grant Committee recently presented awards to seven area nursing students, totaling $7000. The financial aid covers the cost of tuition, books and other educational expenses. To be eligible for the nursing grant, candidates must be enrolled in the nursing program at Chesapeake College or another accredited nursing program and maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average; applicants can reapply each year. This program helps to stimulate enrollment in nursing studies and fosters a stream of educated professionals for the workforce.
The nursing grants were funded by donations made by members of the Auxiliary, community members, the Hospitality Shop located at UM SMC Shore at Dorchester, and the Robin Hood Shop. Individual contributions made by community members and donors totaled more than $2,000. Additionally, the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary Board made a $5,000 donation toward the grant program.
The Nursing Grant Committee consists of Jean Baker, Chairperson; Patti Blakeley; Diane McCarthy; and Joy Carpenter. All committee members are retired nurses.
“On behalf of the entire Nursing Grant Committee, I want to congratulate these seven exceptional individuals who truly have a sincere compassion for the nursing profession,” remarked Jean Baker, Chairperson of the Nursing Grant Committee. “We want to wish all of them much success as they embark on their studies to become nurses.”
