As confirmed by several national studies, the good news for Chestertown and towns like it, is that the presence of a college raises property values. The not so good news is that not many folks actually want the students from those schools living next door.
Of course, that is the heart of the historic love-hate relationship between colleges and the towns they inhabit, but now it seems communities are starting to go beyond the standard call in the middle of the night to local police to keep their neighborhoods peaceful ones.
As this recent program of American Public Media’s Marketplace suggests, homeowners and their neighbors are using new tools to welcome young adults to the hood.
