Chestertown RiverArts prides itself on offering a broad range of classes in varied media and subject matter, geared to all levels of artists. Four workshops will be held in October. Note the registration deadlines so that you don’t miss out on any of these wonderful workshops.
“The Art of iPhoneography” with Anne Highfield will be held Mondays, October 6 through 27, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Students will be amazed at what they can do with their phones! The best camera for taking pictures is the one that you always have with you. Photographing with a mobile device adds a level of convenience, flexibility and spontaneity to the photographic process. This 4-week class will provide a solid introduction to using the iPhone/iPad as a creative tool for editing photos. During each class, we will examine a different app or technique will be examined. Then students have a week to practice before the introduction of the next app. A list of apps will be provided to participants so that they may be downloaded in time for the first class.
Anne Highfield fuels her creative spirit by exploring the process of capturing and editing photos with her iPhone. Her images have been featured on various iPhoneography websites such as The App Whisperer, Iphoneography Central, and Art of Mob. Anne also earned Honorable Mention for two of her images in the category of Still Life in the 2013 Mobile Photography Awards. Most recently, one of Anne’s images was selected for display in the Pocket Vista Exhibit which will take place at the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts Center in Collingwood, Ontario. Anne’s earnest desire is to build a community of iPhonographers right here in Chestertown.
The class will be held at KIDSPOT, next door to the RiverArts Galleries at 315 High Street, Suite 104. The cost of the class is $165; members $135.
Cindy Fulton will teach how to turn your favorite photo into a painting in a “Photorealism Workshop” on Saturday-Sunday, October 11-12, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Photorealism is a genre developed in the 1960s and 70s. The use of projected images, gridded photos, and even traced images started in the 15th century and continues to the present. Today with the computer as a tool, artists of all kinds can have fun with their own photographs with the use of paint. This class is appropriate for beginners, photographers who want to experiment with paint, and anyone else who would like to explore this technique. Drawing is not a prerequisite but a good photo is.
During this workshop the student will learn a variety of stroke work, color, and value theory.
Cindy is a professional exhibiting artist whose work is in both national and international collections. Her subject matter includes landscapes, seascapes, skyscapes, and nudescapes as well as wonderful copper garden sculptures. Cindy is known for teaching a variety of styles of art at all levels.
This class will be held at Cindy’s studio, 224284 Macs Lane, Worton. The cost is $145; members $115. The registration deadline is Saturday, September 27. Class participants should bring a copy of the photo they are interested in painting to RiverArts on either Sunday, September 18 or Monday, September 29 at noon to review the image with Cindy.
Everyone who knits can benefit from “Finishing Techniques for Knitters,” taught by Sue Wright on Saturday, October 18, 9 a.m.-noon. Tips and advice to help your knitted projects look handmade, not homemade! Perfecting your seaming, neatshaping, buttonholes and other useful techniques will give you the skills to finish your projects beautifully. Sue is a master custom knitter known for beautiful, creative items that are great examples of high-quality handmade works of art.
The class will be held at Sue’s studio in the Cannon Street Studio complex behind 312 Cannon Street; it is located in the brown barn in the back of the property. The cost of the class is $100; members cost is $80. The registration deadline is Tuesday, October 14.
“Learn to Paint the Tall Ships” with Ray Ewing will take place Friday, October 31, 1 p.m.-5 p.m. at the foot of High Street. Take advantage of the parade of Tall Ships visiting Chestertown for Downrigging Weekend and learn to paint them by getting up close and personal.
Ray Ewing has been an art instructor, an active juror and a guest lecturer in the Washington, DC area for over thirty years. He has been featured in solo and group shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and New England. He has participated in the Department of State in Embassies Program and his work is in private and corporate collections in the US and abroad.
The cost of the workshop is $100; members $80. In the event of inclement weather the class will be held at KIDSPOT, next door to RiverArts at 315 High Street. Registration deadline is Tuesday, October 28.
