On Friday, September 5th at 10am The Wye River Upper School will host a ribbon cutting ceremony officially opening the doors to it’s new home – the now renovated 1926 Centreville Armory located at 316 S. Commerce Street, Centreville, MD. The ceremony will include guest speaker, Governor Harry R. Hughes, remarks from Founding Executive Director, Chrissy Aull and tours of the building. Members of the public are invited to join the celebration.
For the past 12 years, Wye River Upper School was located in temporary space rented from Chesapeake College. “We are very grateful to Chesapeake College. We enjoyed our partnership and look forward to continuing a strong relationship into the future. The new space allows us to grow independently while strengthening our program dedicated to serving bright students with learning differences” said, Chrissy Aull.
The six million dollar renovation is the result of a five-year capital campaign to raise funds for the project. To date, the school has raised more than five million dollars. “This team of fundraisers, mostly volunteers, never lost sight of the privilege it is to build this place for bright students with dreams and great potential. They deserve this. This is for them,” added, Aull.
Wye River Upper School intends to raise the remaining funds over the course of the year in order to reduce any debt and keep the school in financial good health. “We are very proud of the successful fundraising efforts to date and look forward to completing the campaign without having to take on any debt. Our donors should be very proud of the investment they made in this facility and in the students of Wye River Upper School, both current and future” said, Tom Mendenhall, Director of School Advancement and Finance.
Students have already begun to fill the halls of the former Armory participating in 2 days of orientation. “It’s incredibly satisfying to see the looks on their faces as they explore their new, permanent home. This has been a long time coming” added Aull. School starts on September 2nd.
