Charlie Hawkins, a 60-year old homeless man, was found dead near a park bench in Fountain Park on Tuesday, July 1. Chief Adrian Baker stated that they are waiting for a coroner’s report but it did not appear that foul play was involved. According to community advocate Bill Arrowood, Hawkins had lived between Easton, Chestertown and Pennsylvania and had been homeless for the last five years. He is survived by his son and daughter who live in Rock Hall.

Editor,
Charlie is survived by two sisters, Pat Grussing, of Rock Hall, Carolyn Stoebner of Camden, DE., and a father, Charles T. Hawkins of Federalsburg, MD. He has been estranged from his children for the past 30 some years. They neglected to have any contact with him for years. He had lived in Rock Hall, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Federalssburg and lastly Chestertown. He was only homeless for the past three years. Thank you very much.

Pat, thank you for the clarifications, i supplied what i knew about him to the Spy, only from what he told me. He did not tell me about his sisters or father, only that he hadnt had contact with his children in a very long time
I had been with Charlie on his last couple of days, and i wish i had known, or i would have been contacted you.. I am so sorry for losing him.

Editor,
I still was his daughter, and I still loved him, thought of him everyday of my life, and I tried to have a relationship with him. I do not like the comments that have been made. A lot of other people had also turned their backs to him and I am very saddened to have to read.

Editor,
Charles “Buddy” Hawkins was a wonderful person with a troubled period in his life. I have very fond memories of growing up with Buddy, swimming, ice skating, bon fires, BBQs, life on the farm, and many others. He was loved by his family and friends. Buddy had a huge, wonderful heart and we were all blessed to have him in our life. He brought joy to my mother as she lost her battle to cancer, as his Aunt she loved him unconditionally.

Editor,
I was shocked and saddened to learn of Charlie’s passing. I work nights at AF Whitsitt and in the past I have worked at Upper Shore Hospital. I knew Charlie and most of the people that I know, knew him too. He was a good guy as some of the contributors have noted. There are some in our population that will not survive when left on their own. We all know this to be true. Resources like Upper Shore and AF Whitsitt could have helped someone like Charlie, and have in the not to distant past. Unfortunately, places like Upper Shore and Whitsitt can not prevent the inevitable demise that many like Charlie sadly face in this life. If anyone has the answer to this social puzzle, I hope that they come forward. Still, I can’t help but feel a sense of loss for Charlie. Although Upper Shore is gone, there is a new Recovery Center starting up. I have my fingers crossed.
