The Mid-Shore Community Foundation hosted its Annual Scholarship Breakfast to present its 2014 scholarship awards. In all, $203,000 was awarded to 26 recipients throughout the Mid-Shore region. These awards are supported through eleven scholarship funds at the Foundation, 9 of which are in its Pooled Scholarship Program.
Through this program, students throughout the five counties served by the Foundation, Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot – can submit a single application to the Foundation that allows them to be considered for any of the scholarships in the pool.
Alice Ryan, MSCF board member, and chair of the Scholarship Committee that makes the awards for the Foundation noted: “This year we introduced our online application which has streamlined the process considerably and about 1/3 of our applications were submitted electronically, Next year, students will be required to apply online.”
Ryan also thanked the members of the Scholarship Committee for their exceptional efforts again this year in selecting the recipients from a highly qualified pool of applicants. Committee members included, Clairdean Black, Elizabeth Brice, Dale Brown, Art Cecil, Earnie Chatterton, Susan Dillon, Charles Fitzgerald, Wayne Howard, John Lewis, John Masone, Suzanne Nuttle, Clay Railey, Jennifer Stuart, Meg van den Berg, and Bruce Wellington.

William O. Bryan Memorial Scholarship, Abbie Heinsohn Recipient. This scholarship honors the late William O. “Billy” Bryan, a Talbot County businessman and graduate of Chesapeake College. The scholarship provides up to $3,000 a year for 2 years for a Talbot County student attending Chesapeake College.
Dr. Elizabeth P. Hagen, Centerville High School Alumni Association Memorial Scholarship, John Bollinger Recipient. Through a bequest, Dr. Hagen, a 1932 graduate of Centreville High School, made this award to a Queen Anne’s County student of $2,100 over 4 semesters possible.
Dorchester Heritage Museum/Dale Price Memorial Scholarship, Greg Tyler Recipient. A $500 scholarship is awarded in honor of the late Dale Price to a graduating senior at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School.
Frederick Douglass Honor Society Scholarship, Emily Harrison and Erin Rahim Recipients. The Society awards $500 scholarships to minority students from Talbot County high schools.
Margaret Ferree Memorial Scholarship, Hannah Hughes Recipient. Mrs. Ferree, a long time Talbot County resident made this $5,000 scholarship awarded over 2 years to a graduate of a Talbot County High School possible.
Grover Bert Hastings and Bernice Wooters Hastings Scholarship, Zach Gill Recipient. Through a bequest, the Hastings, who were both educators, established this scholarship for graduates of Colonel Richardson High School.
Roberta B. Holt Scholarship. Dr. Holt, a native of Caroline County and graduate of Federalsburg High School, left a substantial bequest to enable Caroline County residents to continue their education at a postsecondary institution.
The following students who are currently enrolled at a college or university were awarded a $10,000 scholarship: Michelle Benton, Salisbury University; Max Grable, University of Maryland College Park; Madison Parks, Dickinson College; Dreama Stafford, Towson University, Tommy Tyler, University of Maryland College Park, Devon Bordonaro, Chesapeake College transfer to Towson University.
The following high school seniors from Colonel Richardson and North Caroline high schools received one-time awards of varying amounts: Charlie Brohawn, Sabrina Murat, Garrett Shull, Matt Smith, Megan Smith, Mitchell Wilson.
Lewin/Kent Island High School Theatre Award, Monet Recipient. Roberta Lewin established this fund to reward an accomplished Kent Island High School Student with a one-time grant to support his/her participation in theatre related activities.
NAACP/ Dorothy Webb Black Memorial Scholarship, Tenijah Jenkins, Erin Rahim, Denaja Wilson, and Brianna Wooden Recipients. The Talbot branch of the NAACP created these one-time $500 scholarships for graduates of Talbot County high schools in honor of Dorothy Webb Black, civil rights activist and founder of the Neighborhood Service Center in Easton.
Austin and Martha Steele Scholarship. The Foundation established the Steele Scholars Program with a generous fund established by the Steeles to provide college scholarships to Mid-Shore residents. Scholarships of $20,0000 are awarded over four years to one high school graduate from each of the five Mid-Shore counties. The 2014 Steele Scholars are:

Robert F. Walls Memorial Scholarship, Isabella Phillips Recipient. Saulsbury Brothers in Caroline County established this one-time $1,500 award in memory of former employee Robert Walls to benefit Caroline County residents continuing their education.
