Margie Conlin on Malcolm X February 23 at UU Church

February 20, 2014 by Unitarian Universalists

Share

On Sun, Feb 23, 10 AM, Ms. Margie Conlin will give a talk entitled “Malcolm X — An Unsung Hero” to the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River, 914 Gateway Dr., Chestertown. Malcolm X was a revolutionary who challenged the status quo of racism during the 50s and 60s. He stood up to the US. Government and other American institutions. His life was short — he was assassinated before his 40th birthday. Malcolm had been a criminal, a pimp, an addict, a prisoner, and a man who turned his once belief of “separatism” of the black people from white America into one of inclusion of all people. His life and message changed dramatically in prison when he discovered Allah, and yet again after making two pilgrimages to Mecca. We will examine the life of Malcolm X, a man who was called the “Northern Martin Luther King,” whose life-long work improved the lives of his own people, and who transformed himself from an “angry black militant” into a multicultural American icon.
The musical group, “Pilgrim Travelers of Pomona Gospel Singers” will provide the music for this special morning: come early, at 9:30, while they perform as we are “gathering.”

Religious education for youngsters, as well as infant and toddler care, will be provided during our service; all are welcome. Please call for more information at 410-778-3440 or email [email protected].
