Many of us have seen the remarkable art of Marc Castelli, renowned local artist, showing Eastern Shore watermen at work.
Castelli is the featured speaker at Washington College’s Academy of Lifelong Learning (WC-ALL) “Learn at Lunch” on Wednesday, February 12. He will share photos taken over 12 months spent with local watermen of the Chesapeake Bay.
Some photos were taken for the sheer beauty of the moment and some for documentary reasons, but they all have a story. The stories can be of traditional harvesting activities — fishing, oystering, turtle potting, and crabbing – or stories of the hard-working watermen’s lives, times, and unique culture.
Learn about some of the Bay’s environmental and ecological issues and the increasing regulatory demands on those who harvest the Bay’s riches from the viewpoint of an artist and an advocate.
Marc Castelli graduated from the University of Colorado in 1973 with a degree in Fine Art and with minors in Russian Revolutionary History and Japanese History. Marc‘s love of the bay has inspired him to paint over 1,639 watercolors of today’s watermen and log canoes. Today his work is in many homes, corporate collections and museums across the country.
Learn more at the luncheon. Reservations required. Reservation deadline is Thursday, February 6. The program will be at noon at Hynson Lounge, Hodson Hall on the Washington College campus. Members – $15, Non members – $20. For more information call (410) 778-7221.
