Chul Hyun Ahn:  Perceiving Infinity

Through January 26, 2014

Chul Hyun Ahn was born in Busan, South Korea.  He received a Master of Fine Arts from the Mount Royal School at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. Ahn creates sculptures utilizing light, color, and illusion as physical representations of his investigation of infinite space.  He achieves this through the use of electrical light sources including Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), fluorescent, and black lights set between mirrors and one-way mirrors combined with housings made of plywood, cast concrete, or cast acrylic materials.  Ahn’s mirrored light sculptures arose out of his background as a painter. In 2011, Ahn began a new body of work entitled “Mirror Drawings” which re- introduced his own painterly hand to the work.  The drawings are made by scratching into the back of the mirror layer to create line-based, abstract images instead of allowing the construction of lights themselves to form that image.  Ahn’s first solo exhibition was with C. Grimaldis Gallery in 2003 and his works are in numerous private and public collections in Paris, Karlsruhe, Seoul, Istanbul, Dubai and closer to home at the Delaware Art Museum, amongst many others.  The exhibition will be accompanied by a small publication and has been made possible with the generous support of the C. Grimaldis Gallery, Baltimore.

Eva Lundsager:  Elsewhere

Eva Lundsager’s paintings “sing beautifully of landscape without ever describing one.”  Inventing a vivid unreal world, her abstract canvases teeter on the edge of recognition.  Growing up in semi-rural Maryland in the ’60s and ‘70s, Lundsager freely roamed the farms, woods, and caves along the Patuxent River and made frequent visits to the museums of Washington, DC.  Lundsager received a Bachelor of Fine Art

from the University of Maryland, where she studied with artists Ann Truitt, Sam Gilliam, Claudia DeMonte and the art historian and theorist Jack Burnham.  Moving to New York in 1985 to attend the MFA program at Hunter College, Lundsager studied with the painters Ralph Humphrey, Susan Crile, and Marcia Hafif, and the ceramicist Susan Peterson. Lundsager’s work is in the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, and the St. Louis Art Museum.  She has completed two public artworks, one a billboard-sized outdoor painting for Public Notice, an exhibition at Laumeier Sculpture Park, now permanently installed at the City Academy in St. Louis. The exhibition will be accompanied by a small publication and has been made possible with the generous support of the Van Doren Waxter Gallery, New York.

 

Anne Truitt at the Academy Art Museum

Through January 26, 2014

The artist Anne Truitt was born in Baltimore in 1921 and spent her childhood in Easton. She lived in a house on South Street, just a block from the Academy Art Museum. She travelled extensively before eventually settling in Washington, DC. Her paintings and sculpture are noted for their simple linear qualities and investigation of color relationships.  Critics have often associated her with both Minimalism and the Washington Color Field artists, although like many artists she rejected reductive classifications. She had a successful career showing her work extensively in New York City and across the country. Along with her art Truitt was noted as a teacher and as an author of memoirs: Daybook (1982), Turn (1986), and Prospect (1996). She died in Washington in 2004. In 2009 the Hirshhorn Museum mounted a major retrospective of Truitt’s career.

 

Academy Art Museum Faculty Exhibition

For many years members and non-members of the Academy Art Museum have taken classes in a wide variety of media. This year the Museum will have the premier of a Faculty Exhibition, featuring the best work of its instructors. Participating faculty include Roberta Seger, Diane DuBois Mullaly, Heather Crow, Paul Aspell, Sahm Doherty-Sefton, George Holzer, Rita Curtis, Patrick Meehan, Kevin Garber, Ebby Malgren, Jen Wagner, Laura Rankin, Katie Cassidy, Margery Caggiano and Constance Del Nero.

 

Melo Minnella: Siciliana

Through January 26, 2014

For more than five decades the Italian photographer Melo Minnella has travelled the world to focus his empathetic lens on the activities and places of everyday people. He has a longstanding interest in folklore and folk art and an acute sensitivity for traditions of work, play, and worship. This exhibition presents a selection of black and white photographs recording his explorations in his home region, Sicily. Since the start of his career, Minnella has given special attention to the landscapes and ways of living that are gradually vanishing from the Island.

 

Bobbie Seger: Painting with Nature

January 11 – March 9, 2014

Meet the artist and book signing on First Saturday, February 1, 2014, 4:30-6:30pm

Roberta Seger (“Bobbie”) lives and paints on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Her oils, watercolors, and acrylics communicate an immediacy of place and mood, providing the viewer a glimpse of life on the Chesapeake. She is a graduate of Drexel University with a degree in Fine Arts and member of the Academy Art Museum, where she has taught painting classes for over 16 years.

THE PHILLIPS COLLECTION: Van Gogh Repetitions

Van Gogh Repetitions takes a fresh look at the artistic process of Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890). While recognized for the intensity and speed with which he painted, the artist could also work with careful deliberation, creating numerous versions of some of his most famous subjects. Featuring 35 paintings and works on paper and examples of 13 repetitions, the exhibition is the first to focus on van Gogh’s “repetitions”—a term the artist used to describe his practice of creating more than one version of a particular subject. The exhibition brings together portraits and landscapes from some of the world’s most renowned collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Philadelphia Museum of Art; The Art Institute of Chicago; Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo; and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, including The Bedroom at Arles (1889), are also showcased alongside paintings from the Phillips’s permanent collection by artists van Gogh admired, including Gaugin, Honoré Daumier, and Rembrandt van Rijn, to create a richer, more meaningful picture of his personal life and artistic production.

Cocktails & Concerts: Atlantic Guitar Quartet

The evening begins with cocktails at 5:30 p.m. followed by a concert beginning at 6 p.m.

The Atlantic Guitar Quartet is comprised of four musicians, all alumni of the esteemed Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, MD, who share a desire to expand the repertoire of classical guitar music by performing and promoting the music of living composers. Since their formation in early 2010, they have premiered works by Ronald Pearl, David Smooke and Christopher Gainey. In the fall of 2011, the group performed a concert and conducted a masterclass as part of Salisbury University’s “Guitar in the Gallery” series, and in the spring of 2012 they were guest clinicians at the Mid-Atlantic Guitar Festival. Since 2010 they have been Artists-in-Residence at the prestigious Engineers Club of the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion.

“Winter Paint-In” at the Academy

Cost: $75 Members/$30 Drop-in fee per session

Students can beat the winter blues and spend their days in the warm studios at the Museum, drawing, painting and communing with other artists. Students can work in the medium of their choice from their studies, photos, imagination or still-life arrangement – even an unfinished painting.   Diane and Katie will also be painting and available for advice and guidance as needed. Informal critiques will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Bring a brown bag lunch and your enthusiasm – it can be contagious!

 

Basic Drawing: Perspective, Proportion and Composition

6 weeks, January 14 – February 18, 2014

Tuesdays, 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Cost: $175 Members, $210 Non-members

Beginners and intermediate level artists are welcome as this class which will show the steps for achieving perspective and the illusion of depth in drawing. Proportions and comparative measurements will also be addressed, as well as composition. Through a series of exercises, students will gain confidence, even with seemingly challenging drawings. There will be a great deal of personal attention by the instructor.

Thursdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The class will focus on providing the student with the skills necessary to draw the human figure with sound structure and accuracy.  A tonal approach to drawing while observing and translating composition, structure, value and edge will be used.  Long and short poses will be done with demonstrations, hands on and verbal instruction, and critiques.

This class is an introduction to concepts that are necessary to understand for the successful drawing of the human figure.  The principles of gesture structure and form will be applied to the figure through the use of the rhythms, abstractions and shape.  Handouts and live clothed models will be used for classwork. This will be a fun and challenging class for the aspiring artist.

 

Pastel Painting: Fundamentals and Beyond

2 sessions of 6 weeks each: January 15 – February 19 AND February 26 – April 2, 2014

Wednesdays, 9:45 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Cost per session: $195 Members, $220 Non-members

Students learn the fundamentals of the exciting medium of pastel while painting a variety of subjects– still life, figure, landscape, and from photographs. Various textures, papers, and applied techniques will be explored. The qualities of good drawing, value ranges, and color control will be addressed and students will develop several different compositions and preliminary color studies for each pastel painting. For the experienced pastelist, the development of personal style will be encouraged.  Demonstrations, group discussions and critiques will be a part of every class. Open to all levels.

 

 

Two Plus Seven: Nine Weeks of Winter Watercolor

Instructor: Heather Crow

9 weeks: January 14 – March 11, 2014

Tuesdays, 1 – 3:30 p.m.

Cost: $165 Members, $190 Non-members (An addition supply fee of $10 is payable at first class)

The first two weeks of class will cover drawing techniques central to watercolor and helpful to painting students with little previous drawing experience.  Contour drawing, drawing with a brush, and drawing as part of the finished painting will be taught using rough, cold-press, and hot-press papers.  The seven remaining painting lessons include painting on Yupo paper and using watercolor and white gouache on Negro paper and bristol board.  Most of these supplies and some papers are furnished by the instructor for a slight fee.  All lessons will allow students to explore personal projects based on still lifes or adaptations of personal photographs.  All nine lessons will reference important historical and contemporary watercolor artists.    NOTE: Beginning and new students will be accommodated during a designated  one-hour session following each class to focus on color and technique and returning students are welcome to stay and paint. Still Life in Oil

4 weeks:  January 15 – February 5, 2014

Wednesdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Cost: $145 Members, $175 Non-members

This class is for beginners and experienced artists who want to learn an uncomplicated approach to creating still life paintings that vibrate with life. This course provides tools that will help fuse a contemporary outlook with the richness of old master paintings. With a surprisingly small number of paints, students can mix a chorus of color harmonies. This step-by-step approach shows students how to jump boldly into painting with very little preliminary drawing. Rita will help students identify the clear shapes and simple values that are the backbone of robust paintings. Each session builds on the experience students gained in the previous session. Most students will want to create one painting per session, but the class is flexible so students may prefer to create several strong “starts” in one session. The Landscape  in Oil

Students will work from their own reference (photos or oil sketches) to execute studio landscapes. Students will work large and emphasis will be centered on technique, methods and altering the reference to achieve the desired result. The object of the course will be for the painter to have a point of view about the reference and then work towards developing a personal style.
Winter Challenge – A Painting a Day for 30 Days

Instructor: Diane DuBois Mullaly

5 weeks: January 18, 25, and February 1, 8, 15, 2014

Saturdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Coast:  $185 Members, $215 Non-members

This class is for all mediums and all levels of experience. Based on the philosophy of the Daily Painting movement, painting one small work each day is a great way to improve quickly, loosen up, and develop the discipline to get into the studio every day. Paintings are 6”x 6” and can be any subject, painted from life or from photos. The first class introduces the concept of daily painting and includes an instructor’s demonstration. The balance of the classes includes critiques of the prior week’s student work, plus instruction and tips. The instructor will take on this exciting winter challenge alongside the students.

 

How to Tame Your Camera –Beginning Photography

Understanding photography isn’t as hard as you think.  As soon as you discover what all the dials, buttons and wheels on your camera do and understand how exposure and composition work, you can start to take photographs that you are happy with. Through a step-by-step lecture, followed by a power point presentation showing numerous images including portraits, nature, travel and family scenes, students will learn how to turn any subject in front of you into a good photograph.

 

 

Children’s Book Illustration

5 week session: January 25 – February 22, 2014

Saturdays, 10am – 12 p.m.

Cost: $150 Members, $175 Non-members

Award-winning children’s book illustrator and author, Laura Rankin, will take students through a step by step process of what it takes to create compelling and fun illustrations that children will enjoy looking at and reading again and again.  The class will work with either a favorite fairytale, or folktale, or childhood storybook, so no original manuscripts are required.  Each student will recreate a time-honored story in illustrations and make it exciting and fresh for a new generation of children. Materials List:  A sense of adventure, pencil, and sketch book.

 

Printmaking: The Collograph Experience

6 weeks: January 15 – February 19, 2014

Wednesdays: 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

This class will first build a plate consisting of a variety of collaged textures that will then be printed on paper. Students will learn how to print a small edition of prints from their plates. Other techniques will be introduced throughout the term.

 

Intermediate/Advanced Pottery Raku

2 sessions of 6 weeks each: January 13 – February 17, 2014 AND March 3 – April 7, 2014

This hands-on class is offered to the experienced student and will offer a wide range of making wheel-thrown and hand built pottery that will be fired in a Raku kiln. All materials are included.

 

Introduction to Pottery

Field Trips for Grownups are designed to allow adults to experience a Museum exhibition in a new hands-on way. To be human is to be creative. Everyone should spend some time exercising their creative side, just as surely as everyone should spend some time integrating physical activity into their lives. During a Field Trip for Grownups, Constance will lead an informal tour/chat about the exhibition(s) on view and then take participants up to the painting studio for a related art project.  Projects are designed to get adults thinking, experimenting, and working with different materials and are not formal art lessons.  They are designed to spark creativity and to appeal to novices and professional artists alike.  There is a $10 fee for the workshop payable online or on the day of the workshop.

 

In Service for Art Teachers, Too!!

A terrific opportunity! The Museum offers art and elementary classroom teachers the chance to learn new tricks, talk art, swap project ideas and come away from a workshop with renewed energy and enthusiasm. We launched our teacher in-service day program this past summer with a workshop called “Let’s Try This,” featuring projects that cost little to nothing and have a big wow factor.  New workshops that incorporate common core standards into the visual arts are under development. Popular Country School art teacher, Susan Horsey, offers an exciting new Art Club for budding artists. Each club meeting will include a planned activity and/or a free choice project, with creative guidance available every step of the way. The Museum offers art classes for the area’s home-schooled children, ages six and up.  Classes focus on fine art techniques and materials.  A variety of media will be explored. Students visit the Museum’s exhibitions when appropriate.
