A new Electronic Patient Tracking and Communication System was recently installed in the Surgical Department at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton. Funds for this technology, totaling $78,000, were provided by the University of Maryland Memorial Hospital Foundation as a result of its 2012 Year End Appeal.
The unique technology of the Electronic Patient Tracking and Communication System is used to facilitate patient tracking, improve communication and monitor patient flow of the Surgical Department. Monitors, placed throughout the department including the family waiting area, display where each patient is in the surgical process. Each surgical patient is assigned an identification number, which protects patient privacy, allowing family members, physicians, nurses and other clinical staff to track his or her status while in the Surgical Department.
“The goal of the new tracking system is to facilitate better communication in the Operating Room at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton,” comments John Foley, MD, Chief of Surgery at the Medical Center. “Enhanced real time communication among all the moving parts within the OR and between the surgical staff will translate into greater efficiencies and ultimately positive outcomes for our patients, in addition to providing greater peace of mind to families while their loved ones transit through the surgical event from pre-op to surgery to recovery.”
