Faustino Macuha, MD, of the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology, will speak on “Diabetes Mellitus: What You Need to Know” on Tuesday, November 26, at 6 p.m., at the Conference Center in University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown.
Dr. Macuha’s presentation, which is open to the public, is provided in recognition of Diabetes Awareness Month and is hosted in conjunction with the monthly meeting of the Kent County area Diabetes Support Group. Healthy snacks and refreshments will be served.
“Diabetes is a major health issue in Kent County,” says Chrissy Nelson, RN, CDE, diabetes educator for UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown. “At present, nine percent of our County population has the diagnosis of diabetes. The purpose of this talk is to encourage people to come and learn more about how to manage their disease and avoid complications, and to learn what services we offer to help them stay as healthy as possible.”
One service is the four-week Diabetes Self-Management Class, which Nelson teaches six times a year at the hospital. The next class begins in January, 2014.
According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States live with diabetes. An additional 79 million Americans are at high risk for type 2 “adult onset” diabetes.
