Community Groups and the new superintendent of Kent County Public Schools, Dr. Karen Couch, will come together for a program on Saturday, November 16, from 10-11:30 am at the Chestertown Town Hall. Second in a two-part series presented by the League of Women Voters of Kent County and The Chestertown Spy, the session will look at why we need to support our public schools.
The program will address the following questions:
· What do the data tell us are challenges our schools face in terms of having children come to school ready to learn?
· What is our community doing now to help prepare students for school?
· What more needs to happen to ensure all students come to school ready to learn?
Presenting will be five community groups: Community Mediation Upper Shore / Restorative Justice and Attendance Mediation, working with families and the schools to understand the root problems of issues and work together to find solutions; Character Counts, utilizing community volunteers in every school to talk about character values; the Garnett School Reading Program, focusing on improving student reading skills through one-on-one mentoring; Horizons, an educational summer enrichment program serving low-income public school students with a broad range of academic abilities; and Kent Forward, whose goal to make Kent County one of the top five schools in the state in five years. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentations.
The event is free of charge and open to the public. For further information, please contact the League of Women Voters of Kent County at 410-810-1883.
