Letter to the Editor/Article on Sarah Johnson Brown Candidate for Mayor
I have lived in the Ward 3 district of Chestertown for 26 years. I am a mother of two and a grandmother of four. I am ar 43 years veteran teacher in the Queen Anne’s County Public School System. I have been a public servant for many years. I served on the Kent County Board of Education for 18 Years, the Kent County Board of Parks and Recreation for eight years, The Kent County Democratic Committee, Kent County League of Women Voters, Maryland Association of Boards of Education, Maryland Caucus of Black School Boards, and Local, State and National Teacher’s Association and PTA. Currently I am a member of the Historic Janes United Methodist Church and Kent County NAACP
I am very concerned about the welfare of our citizens in Chestertown. I have heard from many of the citizens about their concerns as they relate to Economic Development/Job Opportunities, Affordable Housing, Affordable Health Care, Safety, Education, Tourism, Recreation, Diversity, Historical Values, and Community Involvement. As a resident and tax payer, I want to make sure that the voices of the citizens are heard and support is given.
My ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for all of the citizens in Chestertown. At this point, I want to address only a few issues above.
The current Comprehensive Plan does not plan to utilize open space that will accommodate Economic Growth and will allow for job opportunities with a decent salary and benefits.
The current Plan does not incorporate parts of Ward 3, especially the communities along the Flatland Road corridor such as Coventry Farms, Washington Park, Trailer Park, etc;
The Plan does not address safety measures, such as sidewalks, sufficient lighting, speed cameras and/or speed bumps to monitor aggressive driving.
Currently residents along the Flatland Road corridor are not attending their hometown elementary school. We need to work it the Kent County School System to redistrict in order to bring our students back to their home school. This will allow parents to have a greater connection with their children’s education as well as support their hometown elementary school.
Together we can make a difference. Vote for change on November 5th, as we “Recognize Our Past, and Embrace Our Future”
Vote for Sarah Johnson Brown
