Updated: Mayor Candidates Discuss Stalled Sign Ordinance

October 29, 2013 by Daniel Menefee

At Monday’s mayor candidate forum, sponsored by the Downtown Chestertown Association, candidates spoke to the sign ordinance that was passed by the planning commission in late summer. The measure met resistance from local businesses because of the prohibition on LED technology.

The ordinance has yet to receive a vote by the Chestertown Council. Instead, Mayor Margo Bailey has given Kees de Mooy, the town’s zoning administrator, the task of meeting with individual business owners to discuss their concerns.

“There are a lot of things that Chestertown has not done smartly to address its business community,” said Bill Arrowood.

He said the town has not been very “nimble” in its approach to business and the “sign ordinance is an example of its lack of nimbleness.”

“If nothing is done by the first Monday in January, I will have workshops with every business in Chestertown to develop a new sign ordinance,” said Linda Kuiper.
