Update: Ride of Remembrance Honors Armstrong, Reminds Motorists of Bikes on Kent Roads

September 26, 2013 by Spy Desk

A Ride of Remembrance for Chestertown resident and avid cyclist Terence Armstrong went off without incident on Saturday. The Chestertown Police were there to see the cyclists off.

About 30 local cyclists rode up Route 20 from Chestertown and cut over to Pomona from Airy Hill Road.

Armstrong died on Saturday, Sept. 21 when his bike was struck from behind by a motorist near Pomona and Quaker Neck Road. Armstrong was 50.

The group finished at Wilmer Park where organizer, Oliver Barnyak, thanked the cyclists for participating.

Below is a very short video from the ride.

Original Story
Ride of Remembrance for Cyclists
Saturday, 28th September 2013
10 a.m. start from the foot of High St., Chestertown
15 miles at a relaxed pace.
.
Please Wear a White Jersey or Shirt.
.
I only met Terry Armstrong a few times while working at Chester River Bike and Paddle. I will not say I knew him well, but I will say that he was always kind, patient and fun to talk to.
.
Terry Armstrong’s death reminds me that every cyclist I know rides at considerable risk. In this single instance, I can see all the close calls and vehicles strikes that I, my girlfriend, father, mother, brother, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends have experienced on roads in the US and the UK. These roads are dangerous.
.
As cyclists, we know the risks and accept them because what we take from our experiences in the saddle vastly outweigh the risks.
.
While angry, I do not believe it is my place to lay blame in this tragedy. Having made more than my  share of poor decisions, both behind the wheel and in the saddle, I do not believe I stand on high enough moral ground to cast stones. I have simply been lucky thus far, as have most of you.
.
On Saturday the 28th of September, join me and pay homage to cyclists who’ve died on our roads.
.
Remember that our road manners are of paramount importance. We are the ambassadors of a culture.
.
DO Take the lane
DO Ride defensively
DO Protect your fellow riders, especially those less comfortable than yourself.
DO Enjoy yourself
DON’T Blow Stop Signs
DON’T Blow Red Lights
DON’T Be a Grump
.
Oliver Barnyak
