On September 4, 2013, Kent School opened its doors for the 45th year welcoming students from pre-k through 8th grade. Kent School began in 1968 with 81 students in kindergarten through seventh grade. Since the first eighth grade graduation in June of 1970, nearly 800 students have graduated from Kent School.
Since its inception, Kent School has roughly doubled enrollment and added a pre-school for three and four-year old children. The farmhouse at Riverside housed the school in its original form with several classrooms, a library, an art room, and offices. Over the decades, the school has grown and now includes dedicated buildings for Little School, Lower School, and Middle School. Other expansions include the addition of a gymnasium in the early years and more recently a new library. The farmhouse is still used for administrative offices and is a most welcoming feature as families and visitors drive down Wilkins Lane to reach Kent School.
Kent School is surrounded by farmland with spectacular views to the Chester River. Thanks to the generosity of neighboring land owners, students are able to take advantage of these natural surroundings through science curriculum, physical education, and in middle school, inter-scholastic sports.
“This unique setting is a part of the Kent School experience for all who learn and teach here,” said Chris Gorycki, Kent School’s Headmaster. Many things have changed over the decades but there are some perpetual features that are the foundation of Kent School. “Our teachers have always been dedicated to serving our students and their families. They hold themselves to high standards and expect the same from their students and they never under-estimate the power of books and reading.”
Kent School continues the teaching philosophies of liberal arts and sciences upon which the school was founded in 1968. “We are very proud of our tradition of preparing young people for the challenges and educational adventures that await them in high school and beyond, while remaining true to our core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, and friendship,” Gorycki continued. It is the School’s mission to guide students in realizing their potential for academic, artistic, athletic and moral excellence. Our school’s family oriented, supportive, student-centered environment fosters the growth of honorable, responsible citizens.
Kent School is an independent day school serving boys and girls from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and is committed to the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, ethnic or national origin.
