The members of this quintet of outstanding jazz musicians are mostly from the University of Maryland in College Park, a school well-known for its Jazz Program, where the well-known Washington DC drummer and vibraphonist Chuck Redd has been adjunct Professor of Percussion since 2007.
With several multi-instrumentalists, the ensemble will perform in various combinations on well-known standards as well as on compositions and arrangements by the students.
Featured will be Chuck Redd’s outstanding jazz percussion protégé, Isabelle De Leon on drums and Mark Meadows, a recent Peabody graduate on piano along with University of Maryland students Griff Kazmierczak on trumpet, Steve Synk on bass and Nathan Reising on saxophone.
When asked about the Peabody alum in an ensemble of University of Maryland students, Redd said, “This is an exceptional group of students but we needed a piano player to fill out these high level arrangements and there weren’t any Maryland students advanced enough to perform with the other four. We wanted to keep the players young and Mark Meadows, who graduated from Peabody earlier this year, performed recently with Isabelle at one of her recitals. It was a perfect fit.”
Chuck Redd is well known internationally as a performer on drums and vibraphone. He began touring the globe and recording when he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio at the age of 21. He also toured and recorded with The Great Guitars (Barney Kessel, Byrd and Herb Ellis.) To his credit are 25 European tours and five tours of Japan, with the Barney Kessel Trio, Ken Peplowski, Terry Gibbs and Conte Candoli. He served as Artist-In-Residence at The Smithsonian Jazz Café in Washington, DC from 2004-2008 and was Chuck was featured vibraphonist with the Mel Torme All-Star Jazz Quintet from 1991 until 1996. He has been Adjunct Professor of Percussion at the University of Maryland since 2007.
