This summer, Kent County Public Schools will offer three distinct summer programs:
1) a STEM enrichment program for children who are exiting second through fifth grades and who have an interest in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math). There will be twosessions, each lasting for two weeks at Worton Elementary School. The program will accommodate two children per grade per elementary school for a total of 24 students. Preference will be given to girls and to children from minority groups, but any interested child may apply. As of now there is a short waiting list. Pupils will engage in hands-on project-based learning in the morning and join other summer school students in the afternoon for clubs and social activities. This program, now in its third year,is funded by a state grant. For more information, contact Dr. Nina Newlin, Secondary and STEM Supervisor at [email protected] or at 410-778-6902.
2) Also at Worton Elementary School, the Kent County Public Schools elementary summer extended year program is funded by Maryland State Department of Education’s 21st Century grant. In its third year, this summer program serves 85 students in grades 1-5 who need an academic boost over the summer. The program will meet Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 – 2:00, from June 24 through July 25. In the mornings, pupils will concentrate on reading, writing, and math, and in the afternoons they will participate in fitness activities such as swimming, as well as art, chess, and music. Breakfast and lunch as well as bus transportation will be provided by the district. This program benefits from several community partnerships, including Echo Hill Outdoor School, Character Counts, Kent County Parks and Recreation, Chestertown River Arts, Family and Community Partnerships of Kent County, and Kent County Public Library. For more information, contact Ms. Tina Washburn, Coordinator of Title I and 21st Century Grants at [email protected] or at 410-778-6594.
3) Finally, Kent County Public Schools offers two summer programs for pre-K children at the Judy Center, located at Garnett Elementary School. Ten four and five-year-olds who are already enrolled in the Judy Center will participate in an enrichment program to prepare them for Kindergarten. The Judy Center will also offer one-week programs for pre-K and Kindergarten children in the Garnett area who have no previous school experience. They will learn about the customs and routines of school, including fire drills, so that they will be comfortable at school in the fall.
