Town Manager Bill Ingersoll ran the Chestertown Utilities meeting Monday and said Well-9, the Town’s deepest drinking well, will be fixed by the end of June.
Well-9 shut down last August due to the buildup of iron bacteria that caused the pump to seize. Costs were estimated at $55,000.
The town has been drawing more from the shallower wells to compensate until Well-9 is working again.
Ingersoll also said that around half the $1,023,055 in cash on hand in the utilities account represents a settlement from several oil companies for MTBE contamination. MTBE was used heavily in the 90s as a fuel additive and was banned in gasoline by 2005.
Ingersoll said that an additional $3,600 is coming as part of the settlement.
Contamination was detected in the area off Maple Avenue near Horsey Lane around 2007.
