Chestertown Recreation Commission announces the beginning of a summer of stars …under the stars, with its new program of movies in the park.
This Thursday May 23rd will be the opening night of a season of family friendly films to be shown outdoors in downtown Chestertown.
The first movie, Disney Pixar’s “Brave”, will be shown at the Foot of High Street on the Custom House lawn.
“Brave” is the story of Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of the King of a mythical and ancient Scotland. Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom, inadvertently unleashing chaos in the kingdom. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the
meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late. Rated PG, the film was released in 2012.
Shows start at dusk, (approximately 8:15) and are free to the public. Area youth groups will be on hand to offer popcorn and beverages.
Bring blankets and lawn chairs, (low seated are preferred) The rest of the summer schedule of movies is still yet to be decided, but screenings will take place on the 3rd Thursdays of each month, June 20, July 18, & August 15 .
Rain dates will be the following Thursdays evenings.
The Chestertown Recreation Commission is a official branch of the Mayor & Council’s office charged with improving recreational opportunities,
programming and facilities in the town. Anyone interested in being involved can reach Bill Arrowood, chair, at [email protected] or by calling 410-708-3942.

In theory, this is a wonderful idea. In practical terms, how do you show a children’s movie at 8:15 on a school night? My ten year old is getting ready for bed at that hour.
MBTroup says
That’s an understandable objection.
Tea Party events start Friday, so there may have been the potential for conflicts. The longer-term view is that schools can deliver word of mouth for the event, which will put this on folks’ radars for the summer showings.
Mom of 3 says
I completely agree! Great idea for the town but maybe it should have started after school lets out???? A children’s movie at 815 on a school night is not going to work many of us with school aged children.
Amy Meeks says
What a fantastic new thing for Chestertown! Looking forward to bringing my boys to these events!
Tim O'Brien says
Great fun! Kids looking forward to it! Worth while to let them staying up a little late.
Anne Highfield says
School’s almost out for the summer. Perhaps you could join in another time that is more convenient for you? How marvelous that we live in a town where someone takes time to provide such nice, wholesome experiences for our families! Thank you to the recreation commission – we are so lucky to live here!
Erin Kusmider says
Great idea and thank you to the rec commission for organizing something for families with young kids! We will look forward to the summertime offerings 🙂
Samuel Shoge says
Just what the town needed. Great idea and work, Mr. Arrowood. And, you can never go wrong with a Pixar film 🙂
Bill Arrowood says
Despite the threat of rain and a school night, over 100 people gathered on the lawn for our first film night, a tremendous beginning for this pilot program to offer new fun things for families in area. A largely diverse group of families were able to walk downtown and enjoy the breezy evening on the water. While many attendees were local to Chestertown, some came all the way from the far flung towns of Worton and Crumpton.
Unfortunately light showers began with about 20 minutes remaining in the movie and many folks scattered, but a stalwart handful stayed on for the exciting conclusion. Shortly after the credits rolled, the skies opened and rain came down in earnest.
Many thanks to the members of the Rec Commission for set up and breakdown, especially in the flurry before the storm, also thanks to Washington College for allowing us to use the lawn at the Custom House, to WIN for donating the popcorn machine and to the Elks Little League baseball team for manning the concessions.
All things considered, a great night for families in Chestertown. We look forward to our next showing on Thursday June 20th.
