Timothy Lloyd Tilghman will speak about the life and military career of Confederate States of America Brigadier General Lloyd Tilghman, at its breakfast meeting on Thursday, May 16. General Tilghman was important leader in the Civil War who was born in Claiborne, Talbot County, MD.
The CBG meets for breakfast every Thursday at 7:30AM at the Holiday Inn Express in Chestertown.
General Tilghman graduated from West Point in the Class 1836. He worked for a number of railroads in the South until the start of the Civil War when he volunteered for service in the Confederate Army. His extensive construction experience resulted in his appointment as the general in charge of constructing a number forts along the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers. He was commanding the garrisons of these forts when they were attacked by forces under the command of General Grant. Grant’s southern drive from Cairo, IL, eventually led to the battles of Shiloh and Vicksburg.
General Tilghman helped lead a successful Confederate ambush of Union troops at Coffeeville, MS. Shortly afterwards, he was killed when Grant’s forces destroyed much of the Confederate army at Baker’s Creek Bridge, 20 miles east of Vicksburg, MS.
