Chestertown RiverArts will be hosting two shows in March; its very popular annual Fiber Show and a thematic show entitled Spring Fever. The shows will open with a champagne and chocolate reception on First Friday, March 1, 5-8pm at the RiverArts Gallery, 315 High Street.
The Fiber Show will include some twenty artists who work in a range of media including stitchery, quilting, weaving, knitting, rug hooking, papermaking and other fiber applications. In addition to local and regional artists, the show will have artists coming from Maine, Massachusetts and Delaware. This is an invitational show curated by Sue Wright.
Among the many talented fiber artists is award-winning quilter, Betsy Abbott who will be exhibiting her “Luna Eclipse” quilt. Abbott describes herself as an avid storyteller “drawn to creating landscapes and realistic images which invite the viewer to participate in the mood or story.”
Another participating artist is Gina Bosworth who is known for her beautiful knotted miniatures who has taken her art in a new direction. She is currently integrating fibers with papers to create mixed media explorations of pattern, geometry and harmony.
Different this year are handmade paper lampshades by Virginia Sarsfield. Bits of fiber from walks in the woods or along the sea, mill ends from a textile mill, bright pigments ground from the earth and more find their way into her papers resulting in different shades and textures.
Integrated within the fiber exhibit are works of art which capture the sense of Spring Fever, a show including a range of media also curated by Sue Wright. It won’t be long before we’re back on our bikes, mowing the lawn or working in the garden, looking forward to the wonderful green of winter wheat and/or enjoying the morning sunrise with a cup of coffee on the porch. Artists interpret spring fever in a variety of ways, some using a brighter color palette, some invoking images of growth and new beginnings, and some just bursting with pent-up energy. Pastel artist, Mary Pritchard, takes a unique approach with her painting of piglets.
The exhibits will run through March 30. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday from 11am-4pm and Saturday from 9am to 3pm.
