On a crisp fall afternoon in November, Boyd Gibbons, author of the award-winning “Wye Island,” joined moderator Lynn Scarlett, former Deputy Secretary of the Interior, and four other panelists* to discuss the extraordinary plans for Wye Island in Queen Anne’s County of famed land developer, James Rouse, on the 40th anniversary of its conceptual birth.
The Chestertown Spy, in partnership with the Aspen Institute and the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, hosted the discussion at Aspen’s Wye Woods cConference Center, to acknowledge the role Rouse’s Wye Island concept played in land conservation history, and to compare it now with contemporary issues facing Queen Anne’s County and other high population centers in the country.
In the sixth of six segments, Mr. Gibbons responds to the threat of big box retail chains and some final thoughts on what has been learned since his book Wye Island was published fifty-five years ago.
The video is approximately four minutes.
* Other panelists include:
Rob Etgen – Executive Director, Eastern Shore Land Conservancy
Ted Rouse – Chairman Big City Farms (Son of James Rouse)
John Wilson – Regional Real Estate Developer
Robin Wood – Former Staff, Queen Anne’s County Planning Office
The Chestertown Spy wishes to thank the Avalon Foundation’s Tim Weigand for his assistance in this production.

I enjoyed this . Let us make sure that anyone influencing growth on the Eastern Shore does so with stewardship and vision. The ideas behind
Kent Island ‘s over – development should be thrown out for good.
