Sinatra fans of all ages should not miss the one-of-a-kind multimedia tribute starring crooner Tony Sands as “The Voice,” at the Garfield Center for the Arts Sunday, February 17 at 3 pm.
The show, “It Was a Very Good Year,” devised and written by Sands, covers Sinatra’s life from his early days in Hoboken, N.J., to his triumphant emergence from retirement. Frank practically walks off of the screen and performs on the stage just for you. Sands launches with Sinatra’s early years, backed by big bands and Tommy Dorsey, and stretches all the way to the Madison Square Garden comeback, while detailing the various stops in between.
Sands first recognized his knack for emulating Ol’ Blue Eyes when he was a teenager.“I never tried to change my vocals to imitate or impersonate Frank. It just came out naturally,” he says. “People love the show, they really don’t expect what they’re going to be seeing. It really is like a musical.”
It’s not a spoiler to note that Sands closes his show with Sinatra’s trademark sendoff, “Put Your Dreams Away,” as made famous in his ABC television program.“Right after we do the Main Event segment, there’s a burst of stars on screen and Frank gets a heavenly call from Dean and Sammy,” says Sands. “They say, ‘Hey, Frank, you’ve gotta get back up here. God’s trying to sing your songs and it’s not going over too well.’”
Sands croons a final few notes, dons Sinatra’s fedora, slings his coat over his shoulder and saunters easily off stage, past a familiar lamppost.
“That’s the way you’ve gotta remember this man,” Sands explains. “That was his exit.”
