Chestertown RiverArts, a union between Chestertown Arts League and Chester River Artworks, is beginning its new art education series by offering two workshops by Mike Rooney, nationally renowned North Carolina plein air artist: an evening Paint Camp on September 19 and a two day Plein Air Workshop on September 20 and 21.
Rooney usually paints in oil and loves to show the effect of light on water, boats, and the beach environment, all things we love on the Eastern Shore. He has painted everything from the salt marshes of Cape Cod and the rugged coast of Maine, to the mangroves and turquoise waters of Key West. He has filmed several ‘how-to’ dvd’s, and is represented in galleries in several states in the US. Rooney’s art is also collected overseas. You can learn more about Mike, his art and workshops from his website:

The Paint Camp will be held in the new RiverArts Gallery at 315 High Street, Suite 106 on September 19 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. The cost is $35 for RiverArts members, or $45 for non-members.
Description of Class: Follow along with Mike’s step-by-step demonstrations, and leave with your very own painting even if you’ve never painted before. Learn how to mix colors by using a limited palette of water-based acrylic paint (dries in minutes) in red, yellow, blue, black and white, applied to a 9 x 12 inch primed canvas. You’ll get drawing, composition, and brushwork tips, learn how to paint form, portray sunlight, and more! All supplies are included. This class is perfect for the complete beginner as well as the intermediate experienced painter. Class is two and a half hours of paint-pushing fun enhanced with a glass of wine.
The Plein Air Workshop will run from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on September 20 and 21 at the High Street location. The cost is $150 for RiverArts members, $175 for non-members.
Description of Class: This class is for the beginner through advanced intermediate plein air (outside) painter. You’ll cover the basics, like how to only carry the most necessary gear, and how to draw the scene by editing it down to the most essential elements. You’ll learn the ABC’s of value and how to get a value “blueprint” down quickly and accurately, as well as how to mix any color with a limited palette of red, yellow, blue and white. If you have never painted outside or don’t feel very confident about doing it, this class will take that fear away and make painting landscapes and scenes outdoors easy and fun.
If you are interested in attending either workshop, please mail your name, contact information and a check made out to Chestertown RiverArts for the cost of the workshop to RiverArts at 315 High Street, Suite 106, Chestertown, MD 21620.
