Washington College’s plan to install six windows at the Sgt. John H. Newnam Armory to face the Chester River has been kicked downstairs. The Maryland Historic Trust, originally opposed to the idea, has given the town the green light to rule on whether windows can be installed to provide a view of the river.
The Trust originally denied the application for windows because they believed it would alter the historic integrity of the property. But local stakeholders lobbied the Trust on the Armory’s importance to Chestertown’s waterfront future.
The Town Council will more than likely take up the matter at Monday’s council meeting and the Chestertown Historic Commission will probably rule on this and future historic issues for the armory.

During renovations when the state wanted to change the windows to make the building more energy efficient, the request was denied. Now under consideration is a request to change the windows for a view of the river. Hmmm.
