Before adjourning for the summer, the board of directors of the Chester River Hospital Auxiliary made a second gift of $50,000 to help purchase a state-of-the-art, 3-D digital mammography system for the hospital. This gift pushes the funds received for this equipment well over the 50% mark of the $400,000 goal. To date, the Auxiliary has donated $85,000 to this project.
“The auxiliary exists to support the mission of the hospital,” said Jack Edson, auxiliary president. “We receive the bulk of our funding through sales at our thrift store, the Nearly New Shop in downtown Chestertown, and at our gift shop in the hospital lobby. We’ve had a few really great years and it was time to put the funds to work for a very important project.”
Annually, Chester River Hospital’s radiology department performs an average of 3,523 screening and diagnostic mammograms. In 2010, 12.7% of those studies had “suspicious findings.” Thirty percent (30%) of those suspicious findings were in fact, breast cancer, according to hospital data.
“When installed, the radiology department plans to increase the number of diagnostic mammograms it performs in the first year by at least 10%,” commented Kelly Bottomley, RTR, imaging director/pacs administrator, Chester River Hospital. “This new technology detects breast cancer at the earliest possible stage, which is critical to successful treatment.”
