The Garfield Center for the Arts at the Prince Theatre’s summer “Playmakers” program has opened its Hedgelawn Performance Series to the general public, inviting adults and children of all ages to join the intercultural musical fun at 1:00 on three Friday afternoons in July.
The Hedgelawn Series will offer music, dance, costumes and styles from around the globe and back in time. The one-hour shows are included in the sold-out Playmakers Summer Camp program for youngsters, ages 8 to 15. Tickets non-campers will be $5 at the Garfield Box Office.
When Cantaré Latin American Music brings “Mucha Musica” to the Garfield Center on July 13, the audience will be transported to Latin America and the sound of Spanish and Portuguese songs. Kids and adults alike will sing, play instruments and dance salsa as they learn about the rhythms and influences that shaped Latin music—music with roots in indigenous, European and African cultures.
A week later, on July 20th, the Garfield stage will look and sound like a Chicago cabaret, circa 1932, when jazz, the Charleston and flapper costumes were all the rage. An aspiring guitarist named Franky and three Music Hall starlets make up the Rôle de Dames troupe, belting and crooning original songs and old standards in French and English, as if Prohibition-era gangs were battling Elliot Ness out on High Street.
The Garfield audience will be off to Russia on July 27th, when three classically trained dancers from the world renowned Barynya ensemble comes to town. Barynya has been presenting Russian, Cossack, Ukrainian, Jewish and Gypsy Roma songs and dances since 1991, from Carnegie Hall to the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC. Their performance at the Garfield will be specially tailored for the young Playmakers audience.
