Billy Bragg may be known to many in this country as Wilco’s collaborator in two excellent, Grammy nominated, Woody Guthrie tribute cds, Mermaid Avenue, Volumes I and II, but early fans of The Clash and socially conscious singer-songwriters have been following his career for three decades. (Guthrie’s daughter, Nora, commissioned Bragg to get her father, “…. down off the pedestal and bring him back to real, flesh-and-blood life,” using all the material he left behind in various stages of completion.) Bragg will be bringing his show, “Ain’t Nobody That Can Sing Like Me,” to the Avalon Theatre in Easton this Sunday, July 15, in honor of Woody Guthrie’s 100th Birthday.
Bragg wrote recently on his blog, “Half way through the North American tour. Been doing a show in the US in which the first half is songs from Mermaid Avenue, played on an old Gibson acoustic, followed by a second set of BB songs on the electric guitar. It has been going down really well on the dates so far.”
And fyi, Bragg and Wilco just released a third volume in the Mermaid Avenue series.
“Bragg’s idealistic…charismatic, funny, and incisive, both in his songwriting and his storytelling.” – Hartford Courant
