The former Chestertown Arts League, which has now merged with Artworks to form Chestertown RiverArts, is celebrating its 66 year history and paying tribute to its early leaders with a reception on First Friday, July 6 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the CAL Gallery. The reception will feature art by some of CAL’s early leaders including the well respected and talented Gretchen Wood Call, Libby Kerr, Barbara Finneson, Anne Klinefelter, Shin Ja Whiteley, , Jane Hackett, Jack Fancher, Barbara Vann, Lorraine Fry and Marj Morani.
The Chestertown Arts League was established shortly after World War II when the Artist’s Professional League of New York City requested that board member, Gretchen Wood Call, establish a chapter on Maryland’s Eastern Shore where she had her summer home. Members met at artist’s homes to paint. In 1967 the Arts League was incorporated as a non-profit organization. The first Juried Show was held at Washington College in 1948. Art In The Park was established around the mid 80’s. The group later moved to the present location around the year 2000.
The Arts League is now doing business under a new trade name, Chestertown RiverArts, as part of its merger with Artworks. RiverArts will be closing its doors at 312 Cannon Street at the end of July and relocating across the street at 315 High Street, Suite 106.
Please join us on July 6 to pay tribute to the illustrious history of the Chestertown Arts League and its numerous leaders.
