Red Mountain plays high-energy dance tunes, old-time blues and songs from the earliest days of country music, when folks like the Carter Family and the Delmore Brothers were the stars. They learned many of their tunes from older fiddlers in Alabama and Tennessee, and play in a style that reflects the region in which they live. This is a big powerful group with Jim Cauthen on fiddle, Joyce Cauthen on guitar, Phil Foster mandolin, Jamie Finley on harmonica and banjo uke, Bill Martin on autoharp and Nancy Jackson on bass.
The band is known across the country as a dance band for square dances and contra dances (New England style country dancing similar to square dances). Their expertise as dance band comes through in their concert performances with their powerful instrumental medleys of fiddle tunes. That, some old songs and the impromptu humor that surfaces between numbers keeps them in demand for festivals and concert halls.
The band has several CDs. The latest is Throw the Old Cow Over the Fence (Whoop It Up Records). They have appeared three times before at the Mainstay – twice under their old name, “Red Mountain, White Trash” (a Birmingham joke that took too long to explain) and each time they left the audiences calling for more of their fiddle-driven dance music and old-time country songs.
This concert is part of the Mainstay’s “Music at Oyster Court” series sponsored by the Sener-Johnston Family Fund at MidShore Community Foundation, the Rock Hall Business Association, the Kent County Arts Council and The Mainstay. The concerts are outdoors on the Mainstay’s back deck but will move indoors in the event of rain or extreme heat. Please bring a comfortable chair. The next concert in the series is July 28 with the artist to be announced shortly.
