If you want to explore the beautiful Sassafras River but don’t have a boat, call Captain John. He will custom-design a trip along the Sassafras and its creeks for a party of 1-6 in his 32 foot Chesapeake Deadrise workboat, Poor Dorothy. Captain John’s Sassafras Adventures is located at Georgetown Yacht Basin, just down the hill from the Kitty Knight House.
Captain John Ellis is a retired research scientist, a widower, and a father of two grown daughters, as well as a boat captain who holds a U.S. Coast Guard 50-ton Master’s License. He has enjoyed boating on the Sassafras for 35 years.
Recently, he bought Poor Dorothy from a charter fishing captain in Deale, MD, and with the help of experts at Georgetown Yacht Basin, completely refurbished it. It has been inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard and meets all safety requirements for a cruising vessel. Snacks, box lunches, or elegant dinners can be provided by the Kitty Knight House.
The Sassafras is a historic river. Captain John Smith explored it in 1608, and he wrote in his journal about having a delightful time with Tockwogh Indians along the river’s banks. In May 1813, the British sailed up the river and burned most of Georgetown and Fredericktown. There are several stately homes, such as Mount Harmon Plantation, that can only be seen from the water.
The Sassafras is also a great place to see wildlife, including bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, Canada geese, cormorants, and ducks.
