The fifteenth Annual Regional Poetry Contest sponsored by the Caroline, Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s, and Talbot County Arts Councils presented this year’s winners with cash awards at the Church Hill Theatre in Queen Anne’s County on Thursday, April 26. The more than 200 entries included a wide representation of topics and age groups. Styles of work included rhyming, non-rhyming, humorous and event epoch poems.
This year’s contest judge was Ellen Wise of Galena, in Kent County, who received the 2011 Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award in Poetry and the 2009 Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation Creative Fellowship in Poetry. She attended the 2011 Breadloaf Writers Conference and is a fellow of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Her poem sequence, Ventriloquist Acts of God was set to music by American classical composer Adolphus Hailstork, and her poems have appeared in numerous literary journals.
