The Spy received this letter from Max Ruehrmund, III, President of the Humane Society of Kent County:
On behalf of the board of the Humane Society of Kent County, thanks to all who participated and volunteered in this year’s Mutt Strutt. More than 100 dogs and their owners ‘strutted their stuff’ on a beautiful April day. More than $3,800 was donated to benefit the animals we care for at our Shelter and we are most appreciative!
Additionally, there were two Mutt Strutt participants who deserve special recognition as champion sponsors for the Humane Society: Sarah Caron and Hannah Dustin, each of whom collected over $700 in sponsorships! The board would like to publicly thank these two young ladies for their extraordinary efforts in support of our work. I would also like to congratulate Hanna Hogans, whose tee-shirt design was selected as the winner! We’ve had shirts printed and they are now available for sale at the shelter.
The number of adoptions from the Humane Society of Kent County has increased significantly in the past few months, in large part due to the creative efforts of our staff and new Executive Director, Terri Wilkes. Chunky Dunk, our Facebook host and resident shelter cat, is working hard to promote and show off all of our adoptable animals. Our volunteers spend many hours with both cats and dogs to help train and socialize them so that they become the best-possible pet companions. We are humbled by their efforts because without them, we could not function.
YOUR Humane Society is currently updating its web site to better-serve the public and our blog regularly provides timely information and education about pet fostering, pet ownership, pet health and how each member of our community can be good shepherds of their pets. The blog can be found as a link on our Facebook page and is also linked to on our web site.
To help celebrate the Humane Society’s 50th year of service to the community, we have decided to host a unique fundraiser, which we have named the “Kent-Ducky Derby.” We are actively selling 2,000 raffle tickets, numbered 1 through 2,000, which correspond to a number on a rubber duck. During the Chestertown Waterfront Festival in September, we will place the rubber ducks into a corralled area just off Wilmer Park in the Chester River. A professional trainer will then send a retriever dog into the water three times to select a first, second and third place winner. The top prize will be $5,000 (providing we sell all 2000 rubber ducks)! We are very excited about this unique fundraiser and hope many members of our community take part by purchasing at least one chance for $20. Tickets are now available and can be obtained at the Shelter, in Chestertown’s’ Fountain Park on Saturday’s during the Farmers Market and during First Friday’s events.
Thank you for your continued support of the Humane Society of Kent County.
