Kevin Clark, a recipient of both the Charlie Byrd Memorial Guitar Scholarship and the Max Corzilius Jazz Scholarship at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, will bring his quintet with classic jazz standards and original compositions to the Mainstay in Rock Hall on Sunday April 1 at 4:00 pm. Jazz guitarist Kevin B. Clark is currently a student at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University where he has been the recipient of both the Charlie Byrd Memorial Guitar Scholarship and the Max Corzilius Jazz Scholarship. He is a student of Gary Thomas and Paul Bollenback at Peabody and he performs regularly in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area both as a featured soloist and as an accompanist.
For this afternoon concert of standards and originals, part of the Mainstay’s series featuring the young recipients of the Byrd Scholarship at Peabody, he will be joined by Gary Thomas on tenor saxophone, Russell Kirk on alto saxophone, Blake Meister on bass and Shareef Taher on drums.
Clark is originally from Long Island, New York and currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland. He began his musical studies on guitar at age 13. By the time he was 16, he concentrated primarily on Jazz. In addition to regular performances in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area he has performed with premier jazz artists, such as John Abercrombie, Gary Thomas, David Binney, Peter Erskine, Jack Wilkins, Dave Pietro, and Warren Wolf and with such groups as the Peabody Jazz Orchestra, the Peabody Improvisation and Multimedia Ensemble, the Garden City Jazz Ensemble, the Nassau-Suffolk Jazz Ensemble, and the Adelphi University high school Jazz combo both locally and abroad. He will record an album of original music in the coming year.
The Mainstay (Home of Musical Magic) is the friendly informal storefront performing arts center on Rock Hall’s old time Main Street. It is a 501(c)(3), non profit dedicated to the arts, serving Rock Hall, MD and the surrounding region. It is committed to presenting local, regional and national level talent, at a reasonable price, in an almost perfect acoustic setting. Wine, beer, sodas and snacks are available at the bar.
The Mainstay is supported by ticket sales, fundraising including donations from friends and audience members and an operating grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.
