Last Saturday members of the Gunston School community came to campus for “Gunston’s Celebration of the Arts”. Traditionally organized around the appraisal and selling of antique and heirloom objects, this year the school added artists workshops to the schedule, including seminars from faculty and local artists. Flutist and flute maker Bryan Gall gave a talk about the traditional North American flutes he has both built and plays professionally, while local craftsman and furniture designer Vicco Von Voss explained the importance of reclaiming fallen wood for his pieces, rather than cutting down live trees. Faculty members Michael Kaylor and Ben Dize also spoke at the event. Kaylor talked about his lifelong love of bookmaking and handmade books. Dize, meanwhile, shared his knowledge of detecting authentic art from forgeries. Many interesting heirloom pieces were also on display.
