The Hedgelawn Foundation sponsors its first Hedgelawn Emerging Young Artists concert with classical pianist Michael Hong and Alphonso Ramirez on violin at the Mainstay on Sunday November 13 at 4:00 pm. The Mainstay, the storefront nonprofit performing arts center in Rock Hall has as a part of its mission, to enrich education. Towards that end, it provides performance opportunities for young artists. Michael Hong and Alphonso Ramirez are two young musicians based in the Chestertown area. They will present a short recital of classical works on piano and on violin.
Michael Hong is 12 and has been playing piano since he was four and half. He won 1st prize in Piano Concerto (6 yrs and under) at the 2005 Montreal Classical Music Festival organized by Quebec Music Teachers Association. He now studies with Grace Eun Hae Kim, who is a piano instructor and a professor at Washington College. Michael likes to play football, ping pong and basketball and also enjoys reading books in both English and Chinese. Michael will play works by Paradisi, Clementi, Kabalevsky, Chopin and Scott Joplin.
Alphonso Ramirez is 14 years old and graduated from Kent School last June. He is now a freshmen at St. Andrew’s School, in Middletown, Delaware. He has been taking violin lessons with Micheal Strauss since age 4, and is currently playing in the chamber Orchestra and Orchestra directed by Fred Geiersbach at St. Andrew’s School. Alphonso will play works by Masseneta and Accolay among others.
The Hedgelawn Foundation, which sponsors this concert, is a small charitable trust dedicated to the promotion of the humanities, historic preservation, and the visual and performing arts on the Eastern Shore.
The Mainstay (Home of Musical Magic) is the friendly informal storefront performing arts center on Rock Hall’s old time Main Street. It is a 501(c)(3), non profit dedicated to the arts, serving Rock Hall and the surrounding region and committed to presenting local, regional and national level talent, at a reasonable price, in an almost perfect acoustic setting. Wine, beer, sodas and snacks are available at the bar. The Mainstay is supported by ticket sales, fundraising including donations from friends and audience members and an operating grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.
