History of the Ouija, from Chestertown to the Beyond

October 24, 2011 by Bay Journal

Share

Did you ever wonder who invented the Ouija Board? How about a 19th century Chestertown coffin maker and inventor? The Historical Society of Kent County will offer a very special program just right for the Halloween season: the History of the Ouija, from Chestertown to the Beyond, by Ouija historian Robert Murch, on Thursday, October 27, at 7:00 PM at the Geddes-Piper house, 101 Church Alley, Chestertown.

Robert Murch is the world’s foremost collector, historian, and expert on Ouija® and spirit boards and consulted on various TV shows and movies. His presentation will take you on a journey from the Ouija’s beginnings in Chestertown to production in Baltimore and the world beyond. Learn how this simple parlor game cast its spell over the last century and see how the Mystifying Oracle® has captivated a nation, inspiring both fear and wonder, a pop icon to some, and portal to the beyond for others. Mr. Murch will explore whether Hollywood has given this toy a bad rap, or has the Ouija indeed earned its dark reputation? Can wood, cardboard, and plastic truly be evil? Discover the controversy for yourself. After all, it’s only a game — Isn’t it?

Please, call or email for reservations for this program, as seating may be limited: 410-778-3499, or [email protected] . And don’t forget, Ghost Walks of Historic Chestertown, also offered by the Historical Society, are Friday, October 21, and Saturday, October 22.
