State Ship of New Jersey Added to Downrigging

A J Meerwald

Sultana Projects is pleased to announce that the schooner A.J. MEERWALD, has been added to the fleet for its Downrigging Weekend Tall Ship and Wooden Boat Festival on October 27-30 in Chestertown, Maryland. MEERWALD joins a fleet of 50+ “Tall Ships,” schooners, work boats, and yachts already registered to take part in this annual celebration marking the end of the schooner SULTANA’s sailing season.

Built in Dorchester, New Jersey, in 1928, the 115-foot A.J. MEERWALD is an authentic, restored Delaware Bay oyster schooner built specifically for that industry. Named New Jersey’s official Tall Ship in 1998, the A.J. MEERWALD promotes Delaware Bay’s oystering history and offers experiential educational opportunities throughout the Delaware Bay and the Mid-Atlantic region.

Sultana Projects was prompted to add an additional passenger carrying schooner to its Downrigging Weekend fleet to meet unprecedented demand for the festival’s Public Sails. “With a little more than two weeks to go before the festival, we had virtually sold out two out of the three days of the weekend’s public sails,” said Sultana Projects’ President Drew McMullen. “We have taken over 500 reservations so far with more people calling each day. Under these circumstances, we felt confident in adding another vessel to the fleet and were thrilled that A.J. MEERWALD could participate.”

Space is still available for Downrigging Weekend Public Sails on Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30. Please consult Sultana Projects webpage for details, or contact the Sultana Projects’ office at 410-778-5954.
