October 2, 2011 by Garfield Center

History is made everyday, but few of us notice until it is covered in dust and the stuff of school books. Far too often we forget how much the past informs our impressions of the present and our hopes of the future. We are fortunate however that in a community

steeped in history with deeply rooted legends and traditions as rustic Kent County, it is easy for one to feel the brush strokes of lives from generations passed that trod the same uneven brick pathways and dusty farm roads.

Artworks Gallery in Chestertown and the Historical Society of Kent County along with area artists have created a unique offering where art and history merge. “Stepping into the Past: Art Inspired by Kent County History” will run during the month of October featuring a variety of works inspired by the rich and fascinating history of Kent County. Illustrations, paintings and mixed media will bring to mind stories, legends, and notable events, comprising an exhibit that links bygone eras with the present day.

Featured artists demonstrate inspiration by recreating and interpreting the styles, people, events, and places from Kent County’s history through their art. An open artist’s reception will be held at Artworks in conjunction with the Downtown Chestertown’s First Friday celebration on October 7, from 5 to 8pm. The show closes on October 22, 2011.

To fully see the breadth of the work and truly understand its inspirations, guests are encouraged to take a journey back three centuries in a matter of just a few steps from the gallery and tour the Geddes-Piper House, home of the Historical Society of Kent County. The restored historic home on Church Street offers an overview of the people and events that shaped this region, set against a backdrop of period furniture and artifacts. The Geddes Piper House is open till 6pm on First Friday.
