Is my face red! I missed Betterton’s Fig Festival (didn’t even know they had one!). And who knew (aside from those in-the-know and those who actually live in Betterton) that the town has an embarrassment of fig trees? And that they had ripe figs for the picking right now? Our figs, pathetic little things, are still green, and the ones we pillage each year from friends nearby are still not ripe, either. So fig festival didn’t cross the radar here, sadly. Particularly since the short list of fig dishes for this year’s festival is more than drool-worthy — figs with mascarpone and glazed nuts, ham and fig sliders, grilled pork with figs, turkey stuffed with figs. There must be arm-wrestling among the Betterton-ites to decide who gets to judge.
When the figs way up here in the north end of the county come in, we do fig bruchetta with goat cheese drizzled with balsamic vinegar, fresh figs for snacks and fig upside down cake. I’m putting a note on my calendar for next year.

Sorry you didn’t know of the Betterton blog where all of the Jewel’s events and gossip go! Hope you’ll sign on so you’ll have more time to whip up a Fig fantasia next year.

Just tell me who to arm-wrestle for a spot on the judges’ panel next time around!

Ahhh Nancy, that would be Barbara Palma or Wendy Costlett. And next year there will be cookbook sold as a fundraiser featuring all the past recipes, including mine which won the first judging year – Pasta con fichi in vino rosso con pancetta et rosmarino (pasta with figs poached in red wine with pancetta and rosemary).
We will make sure you are on next year’s list of invitees from the “environs.” and you are on the judges list

Many thanks, Judy! Who knew Betterton was a food destination!? Sounds terrific. I appreciate your graciously inviting me after my shameless lobbying for an invite, and will look forward to it. And your ‘taste’ of what the cookbook will hold is bound to boost sales once it’s out. I know I’ll be buying a copy!
