The Chestertown Arts League is offering two workshops that would be of interest to both beginners and intermediate students who work in watercolor: Oriental Brush Painting with Sihnja Whiteley and Introduction to Botanical Illustration with Fran Phaneul.
The Oriental Brush Painting (Sumi) workshops are to be held on Mondays, September 12, 19, 26, and October 30, 9am-11:30 am at Sihnja’s Studio. Sudents will observe the Spirit Chi of the natural world through the use of the 4 treasures: grindstone, ink, brush and paper to create paintings that are expressions of our personal view of nature. Students will learn to improve their calligraphic brush strokes and how to create a simplicity of composition. The class will go beyond the Four Gentlemen by painting wisteria, grapes, and onions. Students will also explore tree paintings which are the basis for ladscape painting.
Sihnja Whiteley has taught Oriental Brush Painting for over twenty years. She is popular for both her traditional work but also for her contemporary compositions which create wonderful atmospheric effects, many of these have been on view at the Carla Massoni Gallery. Sighnja is an award winning artist who has won the Judge’s Choice Award at the Academy Art Museum in Easton and other juried shows. Her work has also appeared in exhibits as far away as Korea and at the Ukraine and Brasilian Embassies.
An Introduction to Botanical Illustration will be held Wednesdays, October 12, 19, 26 and November 2; 9am – noon. at
Heron Point. Students will discover the detail and beauty of painting flowers and plants. This course provides an introduction to the use of watercolor in creating botanical paintings with emphasis on composition, leaf drawing, and shading.
