When Roy Crow’s parents renovated the family farm in the early 1950’s to start a dairy operation, the business model was relatively simple. Everyone worked together to milk the cows which provided a comfortable income for the Crows. But what worked in the 1950’s for family farms simply doesn’t cut it in the 2010’s. It was clear to all that a new model had to be developed to keep the farm going.
Roy and Judy Crow, along with son Brandon Hoy, think they have found that new plan for the business. Over the last three years, the three have creatively diversified how the farm is used. The farm house has been stylishly converted into a bed and breakfast, the grass-fed cattle are now providing beef to individuals and neraby restaurants seeking locally grown produce and meat, and, more recently, the family decided to become Kent County’s first winery with the addition of growing grapes.
While the business plan might have changed, the hard work and special challenges that come with a family farm have not. It is still q vbone-breaking commitment for everyone. And yet by keeping the farm alive and healthy, Roy, Judy and Brandon see that hard work pay off in keeping their own family healthy and centered.

Lovely showcase of genuine Kent County farm life. Crow Farm is a peaceful gem in Kennedyville. I’ve been a B&B guest before and despite all the activity going on from sunset to sundown it was the most relaxing stay I’ve had in Kent County to date. Can’t wait for Crow Farm Wine!

The Crows are also excellent agricultural ambassadors. While working at Echo Hill Outdoor School, I brought several groups of students to visit their farm. Judy and Brandon always welcomed us and led entertaining and educational tours. I can’t wait to try some of their wine!

The Crows give a nice example of out of the box economic thinking and a prime example of adapting agriculture into an economically viable 21st century concept.
