Julia Hilfiker, 18, and Tom McHugh, 73, will once again collaborate in a show reflecting their different views of the artistic process in a show at the Mainstay in Rock Hall on Friday July 29 and Saturday July 30. There will be a reception with the artists Saturday July 30 from 5 to 7 pm featuring a dialogue between the artists on stage. Admission is free. For more information and reservations call 410-639-9133. Information is also available at the Mainstay’s website https://www.mainstayrockhall.org.
Hilfiker graduated this year from The Grier School and will begin her college studies in September at the Corcoran College of Art, Washington DC. This show will reflect her diverse interests in printmaking, pottery, photography, and painting. A special feature will be some of her work when she was in the most formative stage: between the ages of 6 and 10.
McHugh is Director of the Mainstay. In his travels he incorporates sketches and small watercolors in his journals. “Songwriting is a very different art form” he says, “requiring the combination of words and sound”. For this show he will present the written texts of the 12 songs he has written, with notes and explanations of the processs leading to the completion of each work.
Creative arts have many expressions. During the reception on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m., the artists will engage in a dialogue about their work. McHugh will also sing four of the songs that comprise part of the exhibit.
This show is a continuation of the dialog between these two artists that brought about their first show together at the Mainstay in 2009.
