Radcliffe Creek School is pleased to announce that the championship round of the first annual Sharon Price Math Tournament was held on Wednesday, April 27th at Radcliffe Creek School. For two weeks, students competed in elimination rounds based on grade level. The finale narrowed the field to four finalists at three levels of play.
The tournament consists of the math game “24.” In it, students must use four given numbers and a combination of the four basic operations to arrive at the number 24. The rules are simple: use each of the four given numbers once, and any combination of the four basic operations to end with the number 24. In the intermediate levels of play, students compete in a modified version of the game where there are fewer numbers and/or fewer operations.
Playing in the finale at level one were Jack Buckley, Michaela Campbell, Virgil Randolph, and Dylan Stringer. Playing in the finale at level two were Phineas and Wyatt Howell, Cora Perez, and Nat Vivian. Playing for the championship of level three were Caroline Carney, Austin Corace, Paul Dixon, Logan Parish, and Conor Prochaska. After the final round, RCS crowned three champions, Jack Buckley, Wyatt Howell, and Paul Dixon.
The newly formed annual tournament was held in honor of Sharon Price, Head of the Math Department at Radcliffe as well as a beloved Math teacher. Sharon lost her courageous battle with ovarian cancer in March of this year. The Radcliffe community will forever remember her quiet, patient, and unflinchingly kind approach to life and the lack of her physical presence in the school is felt each and every day. Sharon’s husband, John Price, was present for each round of the tournament and donated awards for each of the winners in Sharon’s honor.
