Maryland State Police investigators are continuing their investigation into the death of a child who became unresponsive at his Queen Anne’s County home on Friday.
The deceased is identified as Bryant K. Brown, 2, of the 300-block of Queen Anne Circle, Centreville, Md. He lived at the address with his mother and two older siblings. He was pronounced dead Friday night at the Queen Anne’s County Emergency Center where he had been taken by ambulance.
An autopsy conducted on April 2nd at the Office of the State Medical Examiner did not immediately reveal signs of trauma or suspicious injuries. Further forensic tests will be conducted. The cause and manner of the child’s death are pending.
On Friday, April 1, 2011, the Queen Anne’s County Emergency Operations Center received a 911 call from Brown’s address requesting EMS response for a child in cardiac arrest. Responding paramedics found the child unresponsive and transported him to the emergency center.
Officers from the Centreville Police Department also responded to the call. Chief Charles Rhodes requested that the Maryland State Police assume the investigation.
The preliminary investigation by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit indicates Brown’s mother left her residence Friday evening to run an errand. Her boyfriend was at her residence watching Brown and her two other children, ages four and ten. About 30 minutes after the mother left, the boyfriend noticed Brown exhibiting symptoms of a seizure, which the child had a history of. He monitored the child and called the child’s mother. When Brown’s condition worsened, the boyfriend began CPR.
The mother immediately returned home and found her boyfriend performing CPR on Brown. She called 911 and took over the CPR, which she was still performing when paramedics arrived.
State Police investigators examined the child’s home on the night of his death. Throughout the weekend, they conducted interviews with family members and worked with the medical examiner’s office. Queen Anne’s County State’s Attorney Lance Richardson was informed of the investigation and continues to receive updates.
The investigation is continuing.
