Time has passed since those of us committed to preservation of our Armory launched the campaign “Save the Armory, Yes!”. With our efforts we proved as citizens that our voices could be heard. Today, the interest and dedication voiced in the STAY objectives is constant, and is, of course, reinforced by the march of events. The prospects for the Armory to be purchased by the Town of Chestertown now appear good. The fact that the town is also discussing options for purchasing the Chestertown Marina and affiliated properties is another very positive development. Not so long ago it was thought that the Marina would be sold to develop condominiums, and plans were on the table which could lead to similar negative impacts on our historic Armory.
As one of the leaders of the STAY movement, I am confident that those involved will step up to endorse ways and means to assure public access to the river for the citizens of greater Kent County and the many visitors that come our way. As plans and action unfold, I am certain that STAY supporters will want to help assure Town control of the Armory, as well as the Marina. With some innovative ideas and input we can preserve our community’s historic access to the river, and preserve access to the Armory for the wide range of historic purposes that defined this place for so long. There are other opportunities for citizens, governments, and institutions, as Washington College, to link hands in moving forward with modernization supported by the strength defined in the historic roots of this unmatched community.
