Beginning with an opening gala on First Friday, March 4, Artworks and Main Street Historic Chestertown (MSHC) will host an exciting art exhibition featuring picturesque artwork and photographs that capture the spirit, energy, and heritage of Historic Chestertown. The show will be on display in the Artworks Gallery on Park Row across from Fountain Park through March 26.
The exhibition will feature entries submitted for reproduction on colorful banners promoting the many events and historic attractions that draw visitors to our vibrant community. The “Enjoy Chestertown” banners will be hung from light poles along High and Cross Streets as were last year’s banners, which received numerous compliments from visitors, residents and downtown merchants. The banner program is sponsored by MSHC.
Artists selected for last year’s banners will be recognized at 6:00 p.m. on First Friday and presented with one of two banners produced from their work. Remaining banners will be auctioned to the public via a silent auction on First Friday. Bidding will close at 7:45 p.m. on March 4. All proceeds will go toward Artworks art education programs.
Artworks also maintains a non-profit gift shop featuring unique, hand-made gifts, with proceeds going to support local classes and programs for children and adults and to foster arts on the Upper Eastern Shore.
Artist members of Artworks also support other community activities. To benefit the Kent County Food Bank, Artworks is participating with the Washington College Service Council and its Office of Student Development to hold an “Empty Bowls” supper on at 6 p.m. on March 3 at Hynson Lounge, Washington College. The hand-made bowls will be a unique keepsake to take home as a reminder that there are “empty bowls” everywhere. For reservations, call 410-778-7277 or e-mail [email protected].
A number of artists have also donated work to be raffled off at a fund-raising luncheon organized by the Women’s League of Washington College on March 22. For information on this event, call 410-810-0426.
Regular hours are Wednesday through Friday 12-3 and Saturday 9-3. Phone 410-778-6300 for more information on membership, classes, and volunteer opportunities or go to www.artworkschestertown.org.
