“A Certain Light,” an exhibition of new oil paintings by Graham Dougherty, will open on November 4 at The East End Gallery on Aurora, in Easton.
Dougherty’s paintings are abstracted figurations of light filtered through manmade spaces, particularly windows and doorways. As Doughterty’s artist statement explains, “…logical and pragmatic architectural elements… become the structures on which rest the vaporous colors of emotional and sensual moments, and in them both indications of pragmatic and rational thought, and remembered or desired sensations, are unified.” His work is airy and bright, displaying a firm mastery of color and mood. The paintings evoke rather than describe, playing with opacity and translucence to give the viewer the sensation of interiors, exteriors, archways, horizon lines, while leaving them free to interpret what, exactly, they’re looking at – for one viewer, an archway; for another, a sheltering canopy; for a third, simple blocks of luscious color.
The show continues until December 31st.
The East End Gallery on Aurora, 11 South Aurora Street in Easton, Maryland is open Monday-Friday from 10am-3pm, the first Friday of every month from 5-9pm, and by appointment.
